**Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 5 stars easily!!! Finally, a book that has ticked all of the boxes for me in a long time. I'm a huge fan of Nordic/Swedish crime thrillers and I've found a new favourite author. Yay!!! :) When I first started the story, I was a bit hesitant and didn't know what to expect but the translation flowed smoothly and I was just sucked it. The plot twists were just shocking and the reveal left me reeling. The story does end on a cliffhanger, but that's totally fine with me as I would pick the next book in a heartbeat. I also loved how Gard Sveen has managed to create such a multi-layered premise which is complex and yet so easy to follow. Although the story switches between perspectives and side stories, it all manages to come together in the end. When you see the whole picture, you realise how the dots actually connected with each other and that's what makes for a great crime novel. I also loved the MC Tommy Bergmann. As always we have a damaged detective on our hands, but his psyche is so intricate and as the story reveals glimpses of his childhood, we see how deep those scars are. As a character he traipsing a fine line between normalcy and not being so. Every other character was equally fleshed out. We have a cast of characters that are raw, dysfunctional and show us the dark side of humanity. But, that's what I truly loved about this novel. For me personally, the darker the crime novel, the more interesting it is. If I wanted something light, I would go pick up a romance or chic-lit story. Gard Sveen doesn't really hold back when unraveling the human psyche especially when it comes to the most inhuman and twisted of them. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to crime fiction fans and those that love Nordic/Swedish noir thrillers. You won't be disappointed. I personally can't wait to read more from this author.
