**Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for sending me an ARC in return for an honest review. 2.5 stars!!! Well, this is the last time that I'm going to get excited by a book just based on the blurb. From the outset, the story seemed intriguing and the build-up of suspense was amazing. But by gosh!!! The ending was just plain weird and not all what I was expecting. That being said, it was just highly improbable. I honestly think that the author was adding twists for story progression without a clear idea of how to really end or resolve the storyline. The beginning chapters of this book were brilliant. I loved reading about Cat's reactions to all the things that were happening to her. We can gauge from the start that she has some deep seeded insecurities but with each chapter, her fears become even more convoluted as she tries to figure out if her sister Rachel is still alive. Even her parents and partner seem to be painted in a bleak light and none of them were truly likeable. The book focusses a lot on damaged people. I personally found her parents behaviour towards her as cold and abusive. The book turns dark and violent in a slow insidious way which I felt was promising. This kept me wanting to finish the story. However, once I saw the direction the author decided to take the book, I was disappointed. Additionally, I also felt that the romance aspect became very erotic and disgusting. I didn't find that enjoyable in the least and since the book is in Cat's POV, it was even more unpalatable. On the other hand, some positives for the novel would be that the book was structured to make for a quick and easy read. The language was fairly simple and easy to understand. Although I would have preferred more descriptions for added details. However, reading the first couple of chapters was a breeze for me. It was only towards the later chapters that reading turned tedious as the plot became messier and boring. Overall, a mediocre read. I seriously doubt I'll be reading more from this author.
